Science note: Life at the Edge of Order and Chaos

 

Biological cells exist at the boundary between order and chaos. The genetic program encoded in DNA provides remarkable precision and stability, while the stochastic motion of molecules and spontaneous mutation introduce variability and novelty. It is from the continual interaction of these opposing principles that the complexity, adaptability and evolution of life emerge.

 

Painting note

 

This scientific idea provided the point of departure for the painting. The completed work no longer occupies the conceptual ground from which it emerged; through the act of painting it disclosed a reality that cannot be reached by rational thought alone, but only encountered intuitively through the image itself. Order and chaos ceased to appear as opposing forces and instead resolved into a single visual language. What emerged was not an illustration of a scientific principle but an autonomous image whose unity evokes the living process itself.
